Though their privacy policy is very vague on this topic, third party research has shown that Bytedance-the company that owns tiktok-is using content posted on their platform to train AI. In an attempt to catch up with other platforms’ usage of AI, they are scraping for content at a much faster rate, and in much larger quantities, using the scraper bot Bytespider. There is no way to opt-out of your content being used to train their AI, so it is best to avoid it.

🏷 Service Name

DeviantArt

🔗 Service URL

💬 Body

DeviantArt has been THE place to post artwork since its creation in 2000, however, with the AI boom so too has it seen some amount of decadence. DeviantArt now automatically enrolls all art posted into their own AI software. However, one may opt out of said services and as such it is not a website that we can consider worthy of fully avoiding. User discretion is advised.

You may use this tutorial to opt-out: https://www.deviantart.com/fireytika/journal/How-to-Opt-out-of-AI-data-assets-936608338

BlueSky

💬 Body

BlueSky is a twitter-like microblogging website and phone app that has grown quite popular with AI-mindful artists. Artistic Reality investigation of their Privacy Policy and Terms of Service has deemed it safe for now, but that artists should still be aware that there exists a clause in the Terms of Service that BlueSky may introduce future features (which could potentially mean AI) that can use user content.

Reddit

💬 Body

Reddit's user agreement is pretty transparent with its usage of content on its platform being used for research for Large Language Models. That being said, we did still have to do some digging to what the nature of said usage is. Reddit is not safe to use for artists who do not want their work used for AI purposes.

💬 Body

Instagram is a popular hub for artists and has been for a long time. The service, now under Meta, has been investigated by Artistic Reality in the light of the emergence of Meta AI. We wanted to see where Meta gets the data it needs to train its AI models, and we believe we found out.

We had to dig through several layers of policy pages to find it. In Instagram's "Data Policy" page under "How we use your data" Meta outlines ways in which your data (which was defined in the previous clause to include everything you post) is being used by the company. One of the points stood out for us, one entitled "Research and innovate for social good." Many hyperlinks in the point lead to Meta's "Research" page, in which one of the products they promote is Meta AI, their generative AI model. This alone is suspicious enough, but visiting the Data Policy page on mobile enables a whole new interaction, in which Meta plainly states that it uses your data for "Machine learning" and AI. We got them.

There does not seem to be a way to opt out either, although it is important to mention that Instagram user (@art_bymemo) has noticed Instagram's actions, and outlined a way to "opt out" of the process which you can find here: https://www.instagram.com/art_bymemo/p/C7ekDkDtH9I/?hl=en&img_index=1

Despite this, we still recommend avoiding the service altogether, as we are unable to guarantee the safety of the method above and we don't trust Meta to do the right thing either.

Twitter/X

🔗 Service URL

💬 Body

According to Twitter/X's TOS (1) under "Your Rights and Grant of Rights in the Content," Twitter/X has the right to feed any and all your posts to train "machine learning" and "Artificial Intelligence models," including generative types. Twitter/X has been going downhill for many users ever since the Musk acquisition of the platform, with AI being one of their latest problems. Artistic Reality urges all artists to stop posting their art on the platform, and to host their art somewhere else. Stay creative, stay in control!
