Instagram is a popular hub for artists and has been for a long time. The service, now under Meta, has been investigated by Artistic Reality in the light of the emergence of Meta AI. We wanted to see where Meta gets the data it needs to train its AI models, and we believe we found out.
We had to dig through several layers of policy pages to find it. In Instagram's "Data Policy" page under "How we use your data" Meta outlines ways in which your data (which was defined in the previous clause to include everything you post) is being used by the company. One of the points stood out for us, one entitled "Research and innovate for social good." Many hyperlinks in the point lead to Meta's "Research" page, in which one of the products they promote is Meta AI, their generative AI model.
This alone is suspicious enough, but visiting the Data Policy page on mobile enables a whole new interaction, in which Meta plainly states that it uses your data for "Machine learning" and AI. We got them.

There does not seem to be a way to opt out either, although it is important to mention that Instagram user (@art_bymemo) has noticed Instagram's actions, and outlined a way to "opt out" of the process which you can find here: https://www.instagram.com/art_bymemo/p/C7ekDkDtH9I/?hl=en&img_index=1
Despite this, we still recommend avoiding the service altogether, as we are unable to guarantee the safety of the method above and we don't trust Meta to do the right thing either.
